GATE, 2023 – 2024

Description
“The Global Art Teachers Exchange (GATE) is a 3-day weekend event for visual arts educators worldwide, featuring teacher-led workshops, studio sessions, and art excursions. The event fosters inspiration, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas, with each annual gathering hosted at a different school in a new country.

GATE operates on a grassroots model, prioritizing the sharing of best practices through collaboration rather than traditional conference formats. With no keynote speakers or paid presenters, all workshops are led by art teachers for their peers, focused on practical, hands-on strategies that can be immediately applied in PreK–12 classrooms.

Success hinges on active participation from all attendees, who are encouraged to bring art samples, lesson plans, resources, and ideas to share. We also invite participants to consider leading workshops or facilitating job-alike forums.”

Global Art Teachers Exchange

2023 Presentation, 60 minutes

Art projects centered on costuming and cosplay provide middle school students with opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and engagement while producing truly unique final pieces. Improv Costuming and Cardboard Armor immerse students in essential skills, including communication, teamwork, body awareness as sculpture, spatial recognition, tool use, color theory, and creative commitment.

Improv Costuming is a fast-paced, hands-on project that encourages playful experimentation with diverse outcomes. In contrast, Cardboard Armor is a more structured endeavor, spanning 5 to 10 weeks, requiring extensive planning and preparation from both students and instructors. Both projects have consistently achieved strong engagement and success in classrooms worldwide.

This presentation will feature hands-on fun, offering participants and attendees an interactive and collaborative experience.

2024 Presentation, 90 minutes

In this workshop, participants will create a bag from scratch using a linocut plate and basic sewing skills. This session will be a condensed version of a lesson previously taught to Year 6 students. Examples and handouts will be available, including a detailed step-by-step guide, which can be adapted for use with your own students. All materials will be provided. Looking forward to this enjoyable and engaging process.
